February 26, 2019 - TRA Newswire -
If a small band of Texas legislators have their way, a private enterprise wanting to build a bullet-train line between Dallas and Houston could be halted in their tracks this spring, even before federal officials give Texas Central the green light to start construction.
Rural lawmakers south of Dallas-Fort Worth and north of Houston have now filed 15 bills in the current legislative session to kill a $15 billion project that would link the two mega-regions with train service at speeds up to 200 miles per hour. The 240 mile long high-speed trains would only require an average 100-foot wide footprint for the two parallel tracks, mostly to be run on pylons above ground or next to high-tension power line towers.

Legislation filed to kill the proposed high-speed rail line and any future development in other parts of the state will be heard soon in House and Senate committees ranging from transportation to state affairs at the state capitol.

"It's time for Texans who want high-speed passenger rail service and are tired of hours-long treks on our interstates to call your elected representative and senator and tell them you want your train," according to Texas Rail Advocates President Peter LeCody. "If you sit back and this project is hamstrung with some really horrendous legislation proposed by a small band of rural representatives and senators, then you will never see high-speed trains in Texas, ever."

The Texas high-speed rail project, led by private investors involved with Texas Central Railway, could begin construction in late 2019 when the Federal Railroad Administration gives the authorization to start the building process, which is expected to take 4-5 years and employ 10,000 people in the build out.
