Union Pacific chief says fix NAFTA, not scrap it

CHICAGO — Union Pacific Railroad’s chairman and chief executive said he is hopeful that the Trump Administration will do what’s best for America’s railroads if and when negotiations are held to rework the controversial North American Free Trade Agreement.
Lance Fritz said he recently met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, whom President Donald Trump has assigned the task of addressing the concerns over NAFTA.
At the session, Fritz said he learned that Ross is “very well versed” on the details of NAFTA and that the secretary understands the importance of the trade pact for U.S. railroads.
“I also learned this administration is crystal-clear focused on making sure existing agreements are being upheld and that our counterparts are honoring their side of the agreements,” Fritz said. “And where they are not, this will be remedied.”
