Not to revel in the glories of “Saturday Night Fever,” the Sex Pistols or Reggie Jackson’s three homers in Game 6 of the World Series.
Saldaña would try to convince city leaders that a half-cent sales tax wasn’t sufficient to fund a viable transit authority. That 1977 funding decision shadows the efforts of Saldaña (a former councilman and current VIA Metropolitan Transit board chairman), Mayor Ron Nirenberg and others who are currently advocating for a controversial shift of a one-eighth-cent sales tax — currently dedicated to aquifer-protection and linear-creek programs — to San Antonio’s public-transit system.
As a city, we need to play catch-up with public transit because of fateful decisions that were made 42 years ago.
