In his role as chairman of Transportation for America, former Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith feels he can help promote economic growth for Meridian and east Mississippi.

One way to that end is to spur development of a passenger rail line service between Meridian towards the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area.
    "Dallas-Fort Worth wants to be connected other than air and highway and a passenger rail service following the lines of Interstate 20 west from Meridian to Dallas could do that," Smith said. "There is real interest in this railroad. When I was with Amtrak, we were three weeks away from bringing the Crescent, which leaves New York and goes to New Orleans, and splitting it off west-bound to Dallas.
