A “positive” resolution addressing passenger rail service’s return to the Gulf Coast was approved Tuesday by the Mobile, Alabama City Council.
The vote came four days before representatives with the Southern Rail Commission are scheduled to provide a briefing about the return of coastal rail on Friday.
The council’s vote was 6-0, with Council Vice President Levon Manzie absent from the meeting.
“I view this as a positive,” said Wiley Blankenship, president/CEO of the Coastal Alabama Partnership, and a city representative on the 21-member commission that is charged with promoting passenger rail service and pursuing funding opportunities to support its mission.

“It’s good to see that everyone is clicking in harmony and is on the same page,” said Blankenship.

The latest resolution represents a scaled-back version of a more supportive document that first surfaced on June 25.
The original version was titled, “Resolution supporting the return of Amtrak passenger rail service to Alabama,” and it requested that Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey “commit and insure” the allocation of funds necessary to bring Amtrak back to Mobile.
