Anyone who has driven the route knows that the flow of traffic from Houston to Austin is a 24-hour endeavor. It doesn’t matter what time of day or night, you will see cars along the way.
Once you get into the greater Houston area, that flow gets bogged down to a mere trickle. So many cars heading into and out of the city at any given time mean that a 25-mile trip that should take maybe a half hour at posted speed limits may take an hour or more. Thousands upon thousands of people driving down the cramped U.S. Highway 290 block any open paths, keeping you from your destination in a timely manner.
Adding to the problem is Houston’s dearth of good public transportation. Where there should be light rail along all major corridors – Highway 290, I-10, I-45, I-69 and I-610, to name a few – there are just cars. So …
