Austin Capital Metro is proposing to scale back an ambitious $10 billion transit plan because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic and the economic upheaval it has wrought.
Officials at the transit authority are now pushing forward a $7 billion alternative to the Project Connect plan, which includes multiple light rail lines and a more robust bus system.
"We are presenting another option that takes into account COVID and the recession," said Dave Couch, Cap Metro's program manager for Project Connect.
On the cutting room floor are the northern and southern ends of the much lauded Orange Line, a proposed light rail line that was envisioned as a spine running from Tech Ridge Center to Slaughter Lane largely along North Lamar Boulevard and South Congress Avenue.
