The several dozen people who gathered at the Texas Department of Transportation’s San Antonio headquarters Tuesday to learn about the agency’s 30-year plans may constitute a tiny sample size, but many were adamant that TxDOT must change its ways.
“TxDOT is doing what they’re programmed to do by the Legislature and the governor,” said planning consultant Wendell Davis, referring to a $33 billion TxDOT budget in 2020 that will go primarily to the design, construction and repair of highways.
“I’m not sure what the solution is to all our traffic problems,” said Davis, echoing the thoughts of several attendees, “but TxDOT has to put a greater priority on mass transit. It doesn’t have to be rail, but they’re wasting enormous amounts of money on all these aerial flyovers on our freeways.”
